Dementia garden

We are currently designing a garden for people suffering from dementia. It is an interesting project which makes you think about gardens and their importance in a new way. Much research has been undertaken on the therapeutic value of gardens to dementia sufferers and it shows that they retain a deep resonance even after cognitive function has declined seriously. Contact with nature and carrying out familiar tasks reduces the anxiety and restlessness common in those with dementia, while scents, textures and colours help stimulate deep memories and aid reminiscience. A principal element of the garden plans is the looped path which prevents walkers facing the confusion of a dead-end, combined with familiar objects that help stimulate memories. Here are some images of the initial design proposals.
